Take a complete overhaul of error messages and codes

To check:

• Do we always output a single line "error=...\n"?
• Are error messages useful and not too verbose/detailed with internal stuff?

Further, check that error codes are appropriate and incorporate based on archive/2022-05-10-api-error-codes.
